Installing Gas Detectors in Sewage Treatment Plants

In sewage treatment plants, large amounts of toxic, flammable, and explosive gases are generated throughout the wastewater treatment process. Therefore, various types of gas detectors are required for safety monitoring.

Our company CMC provided industrial gas detectors and gas alarm controllers to the sewage treatment plant. Engineers installed gas concentration monitoring devices in the sewage treatment plant’s pump room, disinfection room, around the biogas tank, and sludge storage area. These devices can simultaneously monitor the concentrations of gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), methane (CH₄), ammonia (NH₃), chlorine (Cl₂), and oxygen (O₂).

Toxic and flammable gases that may be present in sewage treatment plants and their hazards:
1. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a common toxic gas in sewage treatment plants. Normally, it is a colorless, flammable, acidic gas with a foul odor at low concentrations but no odor at high concentrations (because high concentrations of H₂S can paralyze the olfactory nerves). Inhaling even small amounts of high concentrations can be fatal within a short period of time. Generally, sewage treatment processes are routine inspections, and exposure to H₂S is rare. However, under abnormal production conditions, the agitation of sludge and sewage in confined spaces can lead to localized excessive H₂S concentrations. If workers fail to maintain personal protective equipment, acute H₂S poisoning or even death can occur.

2. Flammable and explosive gases. Because wastewater treatment plants contain a large number of microorganisms, they produce biogas. This gas is primarily produced during secondary treatment processes such as aeration and sludge digestion. The primary component of biogas is methane (CH₄), which is not only explosive but can also cause oxygen depletion and lead to suffocation. Furthermore, leakage from digesters is extremely dangerous and can potentially cause explosions.

Therefore, wastewater treatment plants generally use fixed gas detectors to detect combustible gases and the toxic gas hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide monitoring is essential. Customers can select the type of combustible gas to be monitored based on their needs and then purchase the appropriate gas monitor.
